Norway rats may forage anywhere from roughly one hundred to five hundred feet from a nest depending on local conditions, UC IPM notes, but they tend to stay close when food and shelter are nearby. Do not assume a rat seen at a bin belongs to a distant sewer or that a single neighbor is necessarily the source. Inspect the local evidence and work with nearby residents where a block-level garbage or shelter condition is contributing.

They often use lower building areas

When Norway rats invade buildings, UC IPM says they tend to remain in basements and ground floors, although ceiling voids can occur. This makes door sweeps, garage corners, crawl spaces, foundation cracks, utility penetrations, and lower vents important inspection points. A lower-level pattern does not remove the need to inspect roofline defects; rats can climb and building routes can connect. Use the location of droppings and damage to decide where to look first.

Check exterior access during daylight. Close doors and look for light at thresholds, inspect the garage door against the slab, and look around pipes, cables, drains, and crawl-space panels. Removal should fit their routes

For confirmed indoor rats, CDC recommends traditional rat-sized snap traps in places where signs show travel. For a Norway-rat pattern, UC IPM suggests close-to-wall, dark, protected locations and places where droppings are found. Keep traps and bait inaccessible to children and pets and check them daily. Use a small bait on the trigger and consider an unset pre-baited period for cautious rats. Do not put a trap in a wall or void where a catch cannot be reached.

Do not use glue or live traps, which CDC advises against, and do not treat poison as the first inspection tool. If a persistent infestation requires an EPA-registered bait station, use it exactly as labeled and protect pets and wildlife. A rat in a basement or burrow is not a reason to scatter product across a property. The control method should be monitorable and paired with repairs and sanitation.

Biology points toward practical prevention

Norway-rat biology explains why a maintained lower perimeter matters. Secure garbage, feed, and pet food; remove debris and dense ground cover next to the house; manage compost; and inspect after rain, construction, or seasonal storage changes. A clean, visible exterior makes a new burrow or run easier to see. It also reduces the cover that lets a rat travel from food to a foundation gap unnoticed.

A week without fresh signs or captures is a useful point to confirm that removal has worked, but continue ordinary maintenance. The meaningful biology is not a list of names or measurements. It is an explanation for why food, shelter, and a small defect at ground level can create a stable rat route, and why durable exclusion changes that route. It also reduces reliance on repeated pesticide treatments.
